There are times when it is necessary to have teeth pulled. Sometimes a baby tooth has misshapen or long roots that prevent it from falling out as it should, and a tooth extraction is needed to make way for the permanent tooth to erupt. At other times, a tooth may have so much decay that it puts the surrounding teeth and jaw at risk of decay, so it may be recommended that the tooth be removed and replaced with a bridge or tooth implant. Infection, orthodontic correction, or problems with a wisdom tooth can also require a tooth extraction.
When it is determined that a patient needs to have one or more teeth pulled, many times it can be done during a regular family dentistry checkup. In other instances, a separate appointment may be necessary. As is the case with all dental treatment in our office, you have your choice of various types of sedation for your comfort.
After a tooth extraction, neighboring teeth may shift causing problems with chewing or with your jaw joint function. To avoid these complications, we can recommend options to replace the extracted tooth with a bridge, partial or implant.
